Featured this week for #ThrowbackThursday is Alec Featured this week for #ThrowbackThursday is Alec Cameron, a recruit from the north of England, who spent more than 50 years with the Adamstown Rosebud club, a period of service in which he built a reputation as an outstanding clubman and exceptional footballer. Cameron had played his entire senior career with Adamstown. He scored 23 goals during the 1930 league season, won the Northern NSW state league and the Double Cup. He represented at every level available in his day, capping a mighty career with 17 appearances for Australia. He made his international debut in 1927 against China, played against Czechoslovakia in the same year, and played his final international in New Zealand in 1936, where he captained the team on its unbeaten tour. He contributed to Adamstown’s Gardiner Cup (State Championship) wins in 1925 and 1930. Sadly his career was cut short by injury, whereupon he threw his efforts behind his old club. A leading light in the formation of the Adamstown Rosebud licenced club, of which he became a trustee and finance committee member, he also gave great service to the Adamstown Soccer Club where he was President from 1949 to 1953. He was the club’s delegate to the controlling body, then a State Association director and a NSW selector.

#ThrowbackThursday is back with a bang for 2021! I #ThrowbackThursday is back with a bang for 2021! Introducing one of Adamstowns finest and most determined forwards- Gavin ‘Massa’ Russell. He was a hard, but fair, footballer who played within the rules of the game throughout a distinguished career that made him one of the Northern game’s legends during the 1920’s and 1930’s.
Born and raised in Dudley, Russell started a career in 1924 in which he would play more than 300 matches – some of them with Gladesville, Ryde, Aberdare and West Wallsend – and score more than 450 goals. In 1923, in the Adamstown under 18 team, he finished the season with more than 40 goals. Heavy scoring such as that, however, soon became second nature. In 1929, when he returned to Rosebuds after a State League season with Gladesville-Ryde, Russell proved there was no place like his Adamstown home by hammering in 32 goals (a club record) in 26 matches. Twice in the 1930 season, Russell recorded 5-goal games as Adamstown marched through to the State League premiership, while in 1927 he scored hat tricks in 3 successive matches against Weston, West Wallsend and China. Russell played for NSW against China and Czechoslovakia and toured Java with the 1931 Australian team. Upon retiring from active football, Russell served as team manager, vice president, selector, committeeman and president of the fledgling ‘Rosebud House’, as the licensed club was known in its infancy.

Pictured is the ARFC 1930 State League Premiers- Russell is 3rd from the left in the bottom row. ⚽️❤️🌹💚

For our last #ThrowbackThursday for the year, we a For our last #ThrowbackThursday for the year, we are featuring a very special person who is a great feature to our club- literally! He is painted on the amazing mural we have at the oval... thats right, its Col Curran!
Curran remains one of the most popular defenders in Aussie history years after his retirement from the game, testimony to the whole-hearted efforts he produced on the field, whether it be with Adamstown’s 1st grade as a teenager, Newcastle KB United in its National League days, or in the famous green and gold strip of the Socceroos.
Adamstown was Curran’s 2nd senior football stop on the road to Australian selection. A highly-talented fullback, Curran graduated to Maitland’s 1st team before moving on to Adamstown, where, like Baartz, he was offered a 6-month scholarship with Manchester United. He returned to Adamstown, played further football in the North before moving to Marconi, and rejoined Adamstown before making a 2nd move to Sydney, this time to Western Suburbs. The move was inevitable, since the Australian selectors had already earmarked the pocket dynamo for the green and gold. Curran played 35 times for Australia, including the World Cup finals in Munich, making his last appearance in the team in 1979.
Col was a great addition to the club back in the day, and continues to be a valued part of our Adamstown Football Club community today.

This week, club favourite Graham Jennings is featu This week, club favourite Graham Jennings is featured for #throwbackthursday !🌹⚽️
Graham Jennings began playing football at the age of seven with local team Hamilton Azzuri. As a teenager, he moved to Adamstown Rosebud, and eventually made his senior debut at the age of 16. In 1978, he earned his first representative cap with Northern New South Wales, and after impressive displays for the Australian youth team later that year, he joined Sydney Olympic in the National Soccer League. In 1983, he made his debut for the senior national team playing against England at the SCG in an international friendly match. Graham played 84 times for Australia, 44 of which were full ‘A’ international matches, during which he played predominantly as a defender and was renowned for his speed, earning him the nickname “Flash”. Eventually,
he returned to his home team, Adamstown Rosebud, for the remainder of the 1994 New South Wales Super League season, retiring from football upon its conclusion. Five years later, in 1999, he was indicted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame, receiving the Award of Distinction for his football excellence.
Graham is pictured here prior to the ARFC 130th Anniversary Gala Ball, where he shared some special stories with the club about his exciting soccer journey.

For #ThrowbackThursday this week, ARFC are choosin For #ThrowbackThursday this week, ARFC are choosing to highlight a phenomenal player who developed from the club to leap into a successful football career- Peter Stone. ⚽️
He rose up the ranks quickly, initially playing for the Buds as a junior then a senior, then making a move to Sydney to play for Western Suburbs in the New South Wales state league from 1973–1976 and the National Soccer League in 1977. His debut playing for the Australian team was in 1976 against Hong Kong, and he continued on to play 15 games in the coveted yellow and gold Socceroos uniform. Along with these great achievements, he has EPL experience under his belt- playing first grade for Tottenham Hotspurs in the Australian off-season from 1980. His retirement from the game in 1983 didn’t stop his involvement in the sport, as he returned to the Adamstown Rosebuds to help out where he can, including offering his vast knowledge to young up and coming players. To acknowledge his expansive career and his community mindset, ARFC have an annually gifted Peter Stone Scholarship Award in his honour. This year, Peter has donated the award to an identified player with great potential.
